IOM 2, Kennedy 0, Brizzi 0.

Carl Brizzi was set to begin airing a new television advertisement today, but when I flipped on WTHR, it was still airing his old "Tough" spot. On WISH, his new ad was up. The new one is not yet on his website.

Melina Kennedy's new ad is not on her website yet either, but IOM has copies of both. (Ha!)

Brizzi's spot focuses on gang violence, touting his credentials as former Marion County chief gang prosecutor...Kennedy's charges that Brizzi fails to provide leadership to his 150 deputy prosecutors, and that Brizzi's "weak pleas, even simple paper work errors---all leading to criminals back on our streets..."

I'd characterize Kennedy's new spot as "soft negative," a sort of ad that Indiana Democrats resort to often, attempting not to sling too much mud, because their polling says voters don't like it, but to impugn their opponents nonetheless. The result is a bad taste in voters' mouths, but no firm negative impression of the Republican (watch the Kennedy ad; you'll see) to walk away with...It's wasted advertising, and might even be counterproductive. Kennedy can do better, and should, if she wants to win.

As an aside: did anyone notice that Kennedy's ad featured a headline that her own campaign whipped up? "Brizzi slammed over escapes...But in case cited by his challenger, charge was filed."
